"KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Butch Jones vowed to make necessary changes to enable Tennessee to compete for championships when he was hired, and once again he has held true to his word.

The Vols’ overhaul appears complete after Tuesday night’s announcements that Brady Hoke and Walt Wells are officially taking over the defensive and offensive lines, respectively.

A look at Tennessee’s current football staff reveals Steve Stripling, who’s moving from defensive line coach to director of football program development, is the only member left from Jones’ 2012 staff at Cincinnati.

Five of the position coaches have changed, but Jones managed to keep some continuity as only three coaches were brought in from outside the program.

The most significant move was Jones promoting rising young coach Larry Scott to offensive coordinator. Jones decided to stay in house rather than go outside the program and hire a coordinator to change the scheme.

The Vols have three assistants left serving their original role from Jones’ first Tennessee staff (2013): Running backs coach Robert Gillespie, receivers coach Zach Azzanni and linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen.

Tennessee finished 9-4 last season and set a school single-season offensive record for points and touchdowns despite just three players on that side of the ball staying healthy enough to start every game.

Still, Jones shuffled the deck and upgraded his staff, putting it more on a level with the other SEC programs the Vols are competing with.

The only SEC teams that have won more games than Tennessee the past two seasons are Alabama and Florida, and Jones has maintained his 10-year streak of winning as many or more games from one regular season to the next at each of his three head coaching stops."
