Predicting the starting 5:
CB: Buchanan
CB: Taylor
N: Shamburger
S: Abernathy
S: Warrior
There's a few guys in Twitter who act like they know something saying Warrior will play Safety in a 3-4 and slide down to Nickel in the 4-2-5, with Kelly coming in at safety.
I could see that, but then does Shamburger play CB in place of someone else, or just exit the game completely?... seems like a lot of moving peices, too many for my liking.
Buchanan played very well in the spring and will be tough to beat, but I'd love to see him unseated by Bryce Thompson. Not predicting that by any means.
A couple other young guys who should be solid depth or potentially earn a job would be Labruzza at Nickel, Harvin at Safety, and Jackson at Safety.
Abernathy gets the nod until proven otherwise. He has all the physical tools, but just hasn't made many football plays to date. Would like to see Jackson take that job.
Kelly is a bit of an x-factor. Probably underrated by myself and others on the board. If the S&C program has done its job, hopefully he's gained a step and can make some plays.
IMO our secondary will be a mixed bag... Big plays, solid play, but inconsistent. We are running a pattern-match or zone-match which is zone defense with man principles. It's something that takes a lot of reps, which is why you see a lot of odd front defense's improve by leaps and bounds in year 2.
Also excited to see if Maleik Gray or Fils-Aime can emerge on the depth chart anywhere... I have (perhaps too soon) written off Osborne.
