The loss to Sc was bad enough and with it any realistic chance of being WEC east Champions. From a Vol perspective this one tears down many of the bricks Butch Jones built. The mentality of much of the fan base now is he did a lot of good things and built us back us back up to being better than we were, but he can't coach a lick and will never lead us back to what has traditionally been Tennessee football success.
Someone posted last night that there was more consensus on the board than he had seen, and it was all directed at Butch Jones.
What missing out on a SEC east title will do to recruiting we do not know but it sure cannot help. We have been told that recruits were waiting to see if we can win. Butch embraced all the hype over the summer, now he has to face that it was a hoax.
But from another perspective, by inept coaching and not having his team prepared to play a bottom dweller he turns South Carolina into a real competitor. Their season was going nowhere and Muschamp's initial campaign was destined to be another chicken curse season. Not now. More than likely they now win six and will go bowling, something laughable when the season began. We had the opportunity to keep them on the bottom; we failed. Butch Jones failed.
I have seen players at UT digress this year and I have seen the team digress. This team is a penalty a minute turnover machine. Whatever that offense is we run then it does not work. But laugh at Muschamp all you like but he inherited a dumpster fire and we put out the flames for him. I'll get flamed but I have watched SC players develop beyond their talents, and I have watched the team get better. Get better to the point they were the best team on the field last night. Now they have shifted into high gear and are set to have good recruiting year and something to build on. Better than the hollow ring of a Butch coach speak. I imagine Muschamp will send Butch a nice Christmas present, Butch has already given one to him last night.
For all he has done right, and that is a lot, Butch does not seem capable of taking it to the next level. The Peter Principle is on full display at Neyland.
