We were celebrating my grandson's 7th birthday this afternoon at the lawn and pool area of my (not) high end condo. We had just moved all the kids from the lawn area to the pool when 8 very athletic looking high school kids were led onto the lawn by a guy decked out in FSU attire from head to toe. I was in the pool with some of the fathers of the other kids at our party, when one of the guys said, "Hey, that's Charlie Ward!"

Sure enough, he is coaching high school football in Pensacola, an hour and a half west of us. Apparently one of the kids with him is his son.

Some of the kids at the party had their picture made with him, but my grandson had no interest in anyone who hadn't played for Tennessee.

Charlie Ward seems like a nice guy, and he is still in good shape. But I would have walked past him without a second glance. Which makes me even more in awe of the athletic gifts of a guy, who while not physically imposing, was able to (a) win a national championship and the Heisman trophy in football, (b) get drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, even though he didn't even play baseball in college, (c) show great promise as a young tennis player, and (d) play ten years in the National Basketball Association.
