Hello, all.
Today, I may very well be recommending a flick that some actually haven't seen. Given the "standards" that I've recommended thus far, that's probably a welcome relief... but, I'm guessing that many on the GQ have indulged in the flick that started Kevin Smith's cinematic career. He's had some hits [I love DOGMA] and some misses [MALLRATS, I'm looking at you... especially since Smith even apologized for that one!], but the one that got it all going was:
CLERKS
From IMDb, the plot is about "A day in the lives of two convenience clerks named Dante and Randal as they annoy customers, discuss movies, and play hockey on the store roof."
Just so good. If Quentin Tarantino had a deft comedic touch, he'd be Kevin Smith. Both of them tend to rely on static shots/scenes that are driven primarily by dialogue, but where Tarantino seems to have a thing for feet, Smith has a thing for that gleefully nerdy core that a great many of us have, even if we won't admit to it. To get a sense of what I'm talking about, just check out the trailer for the flick below:
The plot summary above pretty much does the job, but behind what seems to be a throwaway movie are some seriously funny stories and even more nerderiffic discussions. My favorite is from the scene where the two protagonists are discussing STAR WARS [RETURN OF THE JEDI, if you want to be specific (and, my nerd is showing, but its title was going to be REVENGE OF THE JEDI until some kid observed a poster with that title and said, "Hey, I thought that revenge was kind of a hate thing, and that the Jedi weren't about that life... why, then, would a Jedi be seeking revenge? - and the rest is history)]. Here it is:
That's just clever writing. If you like dialogue-driven cinema with an emphasis on the geeky, almost esoteric pop culture reference [and a tongue planted firmly in cheek about how doltish some customers can be], then this is a film that needs to be in your library, not just in your queue.
Enjoy!
