Hello, all!
Before I get into today's recommendation, I'd like to wish everyone a very Happy Easter! I'm perhaps less inclined for public professions of faith than I should be; but, if today isn't a particularly apropos day to break out of that shell, I don't know what is.
Anyway, to riff [in forced fashion, likely] on the occasion of the dead rising from their graves, I thought it would be worth recommending a film that operates amazingly well as a comedy in that milieu. No, it isn't SHAUN OF THE DEAD... it's a classic from the 80s, instead:
GHOSTBUSTERS
From IMDb, the plot is about "Three former parapsychology professors [who] set up shop as a unique ghost removal service."
I remember watching this one in the theaters with my father, and being a little bit frightened during that opening ghost librarian sequence. Granted, this one doesn't marry horror quite so clearly with comedy, like the aforementioned SHAUN OF THE DEAD or other films of is ilk, like ARACHNOPHOBIA, for example, but it did manage to make a marshmallow menacing, so it's got that going for it! It does have some creepy moments, tho', and it could be that those make the [many] comedic moments that much more compelling.
It's doubtful that anyone reading today's spiel *hasn't* seen the movie, but just in case you haven't and are curious what they used to promote it way back in that magical cinematic year of 1984, here's the trailer:
I can't even think about this flick without thinking of the song by Ray Parker, Jr... not to mention a host of scenes that, despite having only seen the flick a handful of times, I can quote verbatim. It's that good, I guess... so good, in fact, that a fairly abysmal sequel and an even more unnecessary remake were made. Here's hoping that the upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE doesn't continue that trend. With Jason Reitman at the helm [Ivan Reitman's son (Ivan directed the original)], my fingers are crossed that the adage about apples and trees holds true.
Enjoy! And, again, have a very good, happy, and safe Easter!
Other films recommended:
