Hello, all.
When I was musing about what films would make the proverbial cut for this "series," I hadn't planned on some of them fitting quite so well with the current reality we're all presently enjoying... or enduring, as the case may be. But, that trend is going to continue with today's pick.
I'm guessing that with all of us suffering from some measure of cabin fever, and others [like me] going more and more stir crazy [that's not the film, by the way], we've used some of this newfound free time to ponder some more philosophical issues... such as, "Why are we here?" and "What's life all about?"
You guessed it... from the wonderfully demented minds of the Monty Python troupe comes today's pick:
MONTY PYTHON'S THE MEANING OF LIFE
From IMDb, the plot features how "The comedy team takes a look at life in all of its stages in their own uniquely silly way."
"Uniquely silly" is one of the better descriptions of just about anything Monty Python created. Anyway, I suspect that if I'd foreshadowed having a Monty Python flick on this list, practically everyone would have said it would have been MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. Maybe there would have been a few LIFE OF BRIAN outliers. But I'm guessing that only a few with tastes refined, esoteric, or perhaps even weird would be pointing toward today's pick... folks with a sophisticated cinematic palate, such as @antlfgrnd, @Rockbridgemessiah, and I'd probably throw @BuddhaVol in here, too, but he seems to dig pretty much anything related to Monty Python.
[Not saying the rest of you don't have outstanding taste in film, mind.]
If you're curious about how "uniquely silly" manifests itself in this particular idiom [HOLY GRAIL reference there], I've embedded the trailer for THE MEANING OF LIFE below:
As much as there is to love about the other Python flicks mentioned above, they all seem to suffer from a little bit of drag in the second act. Cinematic inertia, I guess? This one isn't different, of course, but the structure of the flick into a bunch of vignettes is a good way to keep the comedic ball rolling. Obviously, there is a good bit of irreverence in this one, which is one reason why I waited until Holy Week was over before recommending it... and I'm not just referring to the boarding school bit, or the "Every Sperm Is Sacred" bit, or the part where the guy gets to choose his own form of capital punishment.
Even the "Crimson Assurance" bit is classic, and quite cleverly woven into the film later on.
The structure is akin to a really good album with maybe one or two songs that you don't like as much as the others. They're all pretty solid, tho', so do yourself a favor and check it out when you have the chance.
Or don't.
Enjoy!
