Hello, all!
For some, the idea of saying DR. NO is fairly underwhelming is akin to heresy. Yes, it introduced one of the most iconic and enduring characters ever to appear on the silver screen, and cemented the actor who portrayed him as a bona fide star, but… it just didn’t land in my sweet spot.
The follow-up installment in the series, however, managed to do just that. Admittedly, the plot for FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE owes a lot to its predecessor, since the catalyst for the movie is essentially that SPECTRE is pretty ticked that Bond managed to take out mister doctor metal hands in the first installment and wants Bond killed. The sort of Cold War-era secret agent stuff that you’d expect from a Bond film [basically, subterfuge and sex] is here in spades, and it’s solid stuff, but the best part is the film is the assassin SPECTRE sends to get revenge for Dr. No’s death: the inimitable Robert Shaw, here playing an Irish assassin nicknamed Red. Yes, kudos to the writers for the A-1 naming convention.
Anyway, folks named Red have been known to procure a few items, but this one manages to provide, instead, being part of the fight on the train that takes the cake. In the “Daniel Craig is Bond now” film titled SPECTRE, they pay homage to the train fight in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. Despite the new and improved fight choreography and editing, I prefer the fight in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.
But, I’ll let those of you who have made it this far to judge for yourselves. For your viewing pleasure, then, here are both fight scenes:
From FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
From SPECTRE
Maybe you agree with me about the fight scene… and maybe you don’t. In my opinion, though, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE more than holds its own against the more modern iteration of Bond as well as the first installment in the franchise. Really, it’s hard to go wrong with a Bond film, but this is one of the better ones to watch. Enjoy!
