Since there is a thread on knee replacement I decided to put one out on hip replacement.
Really bummed about my hip, which seems to be at end stage osteoarthritis based on the hip specialist I saw last week. I turn 53 in April and have been active my entire life (weight lifting, running, karate, golf, etc). For the past 8 years, I've been playing basketball 4-5 times a week (full court, half court) with no serious issues other than rolling the occasional ankle, Achilles tendonitis, etc. In October, I started experiencing major leg pain on the right side, such that I could not run with out serious pain, had a lack of motion in the right hip and right leg, and radiating pain in my leg while laying down in bed. Was first diagnosed with a hip flexor strain and told to rest for a couple of weeks. Fast forward to today, I've rested, stretched, did PT, stretched, deep tissue massage, still try to play basketball when I can, etc. Pain is worse than ever, had an MRI thinking it's a torn labrum (which was confirmed). When I saw the hip specialist this past Thursday, he proceeds to tell me that I'm in end stage osteoarthritis, repair of the labrum is not an option as there's no cartilage to repair and my only choice is full hip replacement and it's not if, but when. Needless to say I'm shocked - I've never had any hip issues and I go straight to end stage? I'm getting a second opinion because I'm not ready for this and I want to try all alternative options (more diligent about nutrition, PT, stretching, working less, sleeping more, etc.). I'm not ready to modify my activities yet but the pain is brutal. Intense anaerobic exercise is my stress release from life's challenges and the thought of giving that up is not something I'm ready for. Figured I could play basketball at least until my late 50's...
Has this happened to anyone else, basically going from zero issues to full stage osteoarthritis overnight?
Anyone forgo hip replacement and solve it with alternate methods?
Any other advice for a 52 year old?
Thanks
