After a couple off days to focus on recruiting and allow the team to recover following six straight games, Tennessee returned to practice field Wednesday, with most of the focus on fundamentals.

The Vols were in full pads and worked outside in chilly temps.

Will Friend did have his full compliment of players Tuesday, as Darnell Wright (ankle), who missed the UK game, was going through drills. Dinged up lineman like Jahmir Johnson, who did have to leave the drill at one point, and Chris Akporoghene were also going through drills.

Several folks were non participants including Bryce Thompson (knee), Henry To’oto’o (knee) and Carlin Fils-Aime.

Notably, Aubrey Solomon and Latrell Bumphus were full participants. Tracy Rocker has his unit working on stunts and four-man pressures.

The secondary worked all fundamentals — open field tackling, press-coverage and ball skills.

Daniel Bituli was going through indy drills but the senior linebacker didnt have a knee brace on and looked like he could be held out of 11-on-11 work later in practice.

Chris Rumph was out on the road recruiting, so Patrick Abernathy and a GA headed up the OLB unit. Freshmen Quavaris Crouch and Roman Harrison received plenty of attention.

Will Brian Niedermeyer out recruiting, a GA was running the TE room. Freshmen Jackson Lowe and Sean Brown, When o normally work with the scout team, got lots of attention. Quality control coaches and GAs also worked with the wideouts, as Tee Martin was out recruiting.

The quarterbacks and tailbacks did their usual mesh-point work. Jarrett Guarantano continues to look much more comfortable making handoffs to the left compared to the right, where his injured hand takes more pounding.

During routes on air, Brian Maurer and JT Shrout went first in the pecking order, taking more reps than Guarantano. Head coach Jeremy Pruitt watched the routes on air, yelling about fundamentals — “wrist above your elbow” — after every catch. Jim Chaney was critical of Maurer after two poor back shoulder throws. The rest of the period was fine from the group though.
