Tennessee has two weeks left of spring practice, and on a hot Tuesday afternoon, the energy was a bit lower than usual.
We've hit the dog days of camp.
Guys still got their work in, but coming off another physical scrimmage, the Vols once again focused on fundamentals and technical drills. Also, more vets were MIA on Tuesday, as Tennessee has opted to shut some guys down the rest of spring.

Quick hitters

* Couple skills guys were back at practice, with Carlin Fils-Aime returning to work with the tailbacks while Jeff George was back with the receivers.

* Going to be nearly impossible to gauge the quarterbacks during the spring game, as the secondary is super thin right now. Todd Kelly Jr. participated in walk through work Tuesday, but his right ankle was heavily tapped and he didn't do any physical drills. Justin Martin continues to garner praise at corner.

* During the closed period, the team repped punt return work, focusing on gunner drills.

* Walt Wells (checkout the video) was really giving it to the OL today. He wasn't happy with several guys reps, calling out Drew Richmond a couple of times. It's been a strong spring for Richmond, but he'll need to maintain that consistency over the next two weeks.

* Didn't see the quarterbacks throw at all really, but the receivers focused on downfield blocking. The QBs also worked on ball security stuff.

* Marquez Callaway, Tyler Byrd and Justin Martin were the primary punt returners. They did a drill at one point where they had a football in one hand and tried to field punts with just their other arm. Martin was the best.

@Brent_Hubbs observations

In the passing game, Tennessee worked a lot of route tree stuff with down field receiver blocking. That was clearly a point of emphasis for Butch Jones.

In special teams work, there was a lot of punt return reps with Marquez Callaway, Tyler Byrd, and Justin Martin getting return work. Obviously, you would think Callaway has the inside track there with his punt return for a touchdown last season. He's the only returning player with a punt return last season.

As for Justin Martin, he continues to have a really good spring. Martin was again good on Saturday in the scrimmage and everyone acknowledges he is playing his best football. The question is can he sustain the work ethic and focus over the next few months.

While Tennessee is banged up in several places, the Vols did get back Carlin Fils-Aime and Jeff George on Tuesday. Both were very limited and missed some time last week.
