On a gorgeous Thursday afternoon, Tennessee took the practice field in preparation for Saturday’s evening scrimmage.

Unlike a week ago, the Vols worked out in full pads today. The team did its usual positional drills while the media was out there, with continued emphasis on fundamentals and technique. As has been the case all spring, Will Friend, Tracy Rocker and Chris Rumph were particularly animated with their groups.

After a slew of position changes Tuesday, most of the guys remained at their experimental spots. Only Princeton Fant’s audition at MLB was short-lived. The sophomore was back with the RBs on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Greg Emerson, Matthew Butler and Eric Crosby all remained with a shorthanded offensive line. Crosby and Emerson were working as guards, while Butler was with the tackles.

Elsewhere, Tyler Byrd remained at wide receiver (repping behind Josh Palmer on the outside), Alontae Taylor at CB and Latrell Bumphus at DL.

With some of the injuries at the OL, Thursday’s first-team group (L-R) was Drew Richmond, Ryan Johnson, Brian Garvey, Jerome Carvin/Ollie Lane and Marcus Tatum.

I didn’t see much of the routes on air period today, but several coaches did praise Will McBride for a couple nice tosses. Jarrett Guarantano threw two perfect middle seam routes to the slot receivers. The only drop I saw Thursday from a scholarship guy was by Jordan Murphy.

Interestingly, Darrin Kirkland was doing individual drills with the rest of the middle linebackers Thursday. The redshirt junior displayed no ill effects from his recent knee procedure during the brief media viewing period.

THIS & THAT

Chance Hall was in “The Pit” working on the side, just doing light band work unlike the circuit workout with his injured teammates.

Chris Rumph was quite displeased with the OLBs pad level during one drill, making Deandre Johnson and Austin Smith redo a drill multiple times.

2019 South Florida DL Jordan Jefferson watched practice Thursday.
