First and foremost, I believe he should have scrapped the offense he brought down from Cincinnati and Central Michigan. Spurrier's run n' gun didn't work with the Redskins. Your offense may work at certain levels, but it won't work at all levels.
He had a chance to hire Lincoln Riley from East Carolina but went with Mike Debord instead. I believe had he hired Riley and let him run his own offense, we would have Trevor Lawrence on our commitment list still. With an exciting, aggressive offense putting up big numbers comes top skill position players from around the country wanting to get in on it. Our offense would be in much better shape today and would be better suited to overcome our struggles on defense.
Hindsight is 20/20, but even with the hire of Shoop, his offense would have helped him out as mentioned above. More success in the win column would've likely brought better players to the defense via recruiting too.
It isn't too late for this to happen. If we can win enough for Butch to make it to 2018, he could still turn over the reigns to Larry Scott on offense and Bob Shoop on defense. Let them run the system they're most comfortable with. If a change is needed at either coordinator spot, hire a young coordinator who's been successful and let him run his own offense.
