OL played really well on the 3 play scoring drive to open the game.
On defense, some of our pressures need to be cleaned up. Sometimes we get 2 guys in 1 gap, and I don't think we are coaching it that way.
Typically align in "under" which is a 3-Tech tackle to the weakside and a shade to the strong side.
We went 4-3 vs 21 personnel.
TK stopped his feet and missed a tackle on 2nd/10... Should have been 3rd/8 but it was 3rd/5. Have to win those plays if we are going to win games in conference.
Safeties matched well on routes underneath. I would expect a wheel route (out and up) coming soon. Will be a tough cover, but can do it... Or get pressure before it can develop.
3rd and 2 after Barnett offsides... Q Keeper, defended well on the DL, Jumper just not physical enough in his run fit.
On the Sutton injury, Vereen reduced into the B gap with no perimeter presence behind him. Same as on the VT long TD run... Not schematically sound, can't figure out what the issue is.
Croom's role needs to grow. He is savy, athletic, and physical.
2nd/8, 6:23 to go in the 1st. Dobbs is sacked and it was all on him. The defender who sacked him was unblocked. Terrible play from our QB here. Next play is 3rd and 18 and we call a screen. Terrible call by the OC. It was a well coached and well executed game up until this point.
D. Taylor was the first DE off the bench behind Barnett, Vereen, and Kongbo.
3rd and 10 for Ohio in the red zone. They ran a tunnel screen that Danny O knocked down. But if it were completed Gaulden, JRM, and Abernathy were in good shape to make the play.
I'd love to see more 2 back stuff. Get Kelly more involved. If Carlin Fils-Aime isn't redshirting, he could get some burn too.
Kamara getting down hill is a good play for us that I'd like to see more of. He doesn't have the punch that Hurd does, but Kamara will break a big one right up the gut eventually.
At the end of the 1st, I feel Tennessee dominated minus 5 or 6 plays. Score should be 14-3, or more...
Swing pass to Jennings in the redzone, was that an RPO? I'm not overly familiar with them, they came around about a year or two after my career was over... I think it was an RPO and Dobbs reads the nickel. Good play.
Ohio has 3rd and 7 with 13:56 to go in the 2nd. Sebastian (Ohio WR) abused Moseley on a simple hitch. Could have been offensive PI, but I say good route. 12 has to be more pbysical. We only sent 3 rushers and the 1st read was wide open.
Tennessee 1st and 10 with 11:48 to go in the 2nd. Hurd tackled for a 2 yard loss. No one blocked the nose. Ohio ran a line stunt, Weisman turned him lose and Robertson turned out towards the tackle.
Ohio 4th and 2... Well defended at the point of attack by Vereen and Kelly, IIRC. McDowell was blocked and him being in on the play might have been enough to hold them. Have to think JRM makes that play. McDowell played slow in the 1st half. Blocked too easy, IMO.
Jumper was good vs the flare route. He kept a good inside-out relationship on the ball, he over ran that last season some.
Ohio kept 6 or 7 in pass protection a lot. Much like VT in this regard.
We coach our LBs to have eyes in the backfield vs the pass when we are in zone. This could be because of QB mobility, or an effort to get INTs. That was a big no no in my experiences, but we'll side with our million dollar man here.
This one might crash all the internets... Ohio ball, 3rd and 17. We are in a 4-2-5, but rush 3 and Kongbo spies the the QB. 26 yard completion.. Buchanan was in decent shape, good throw and catch by Ohio.
I don't think Mixon is very good on the edge. Shocked that Phillips can't pass him up.
After Dobbs second missed deep ball, the next play was a sack. Ohio ran a simple tackle-end game, Kendrick got beat inside and Robertson outside... But they should handle that much better and simply pass guys off.
Good luck trying to hook, or reach, Kongbo when he's at DE. Too big, too physical, too long.
OL Score Keeping:
Disclaimer: I'm not an OL expert, just looking for who can get a hat on a hat. The numbers below indicate how many times the given player failed to block the defender they chose to engage.
Robertson: 2
Kendrick: 1
Jones: 1
Thomas: 2
Weisman: 1
OL seemed to play much better, but it is also the worst DL we have seen all year... Chicken or the egg kind of thing here.
Cross your fingers that JRM finds a way to go... 20 and 53 will struggle vs SEC competition.
