Hello, all!
Origin stories are often too busy trying to establish the character they’re introducing to do much more with the plot beyond that, leaving any potential sequels a lot more freedom to play around with characters that the original film did the heavy lifting to establish. A good example of this is how much better THE WOLVERINE was than X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE… but instead of focusing on ol’ Logan, today’s recommendation is a film that brilliantly piggybacked the success of that franchise to produce a great spin-off franchise of its own. If you haven’t guessed it yet, here’s a pretty bigtime [and wildly blasphemous] hint:
Throw VAN WILDER and X-MEN into a blender, and you’ve got the same fan favorite character that nearly got relegated to anonymity after the inept treatment in the cinematic turd that was X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. I mean, really, one of the biggest selling points of the character is his consistently sarcastic dialogue, and they introduce said character… with no freaking mouth? How’s he supposed to slice and dice whilst spouting droll, fourth wall-breaking witticisms with no mouth?!?
Anyway, once the folks in Hollyweird finally realized that a Deadpool flick would work if the character were allowed to be the typically irreverent anti-hero that he is, the casting probably took care of itself. Reynolds might be branching out into hawking gin and semi-decent cell phone plans, but his wheelhouse is the oft sarcastic unto caustic dialogue dealing action star. Here, he’s absolutely in his element, chewing up just about each scene with precisely the kind of flair you’d expect. Happily, the supporting cast also pitches in to equally entertaining effect.
I mean, this guy truly is the face of X-Force.
Don’t get me wrong, the first DEADPOOL flick was a surprisingly entertaining film… but this one just takes all the good stuff and turns it up to eleven. Along the way, there’s actually a pretty compelling storyline or two, with the catalyst involving Deadpool’s love interest making for probably the best of the bunch. You’d think that a film that is juggling more than one subplot would end up feeling a little disjointed, but that’s really not the case here.
So, come for the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Brad Pitt cameo, but stick around for the cartoonishly violent and often hilarious scenes that surround it. If you liked the original at all, you’ll be glad you did. Enjoy!
[Day 1 - THE DARK KNIGHT; Day 2 - DESPERADO; Day 3 - THE ROAD WARRIOR; Day 4 - X2: X-MEN UNITED; Day 5 - TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY; Day 6 - DAWN OF THE DEAD]
