In the end, the testing of the team...the skill of the opponent...the adversity of circumstances (weather delay, Willie out, TKjr/Martin limited, 2 starting receivers out, young guys having to play, even struggling) will all improve this team more than playing a bad UAB team (as originally scheduled.)
Bottom line...
- We won (by 29!)
- covered the 20+ point spread for first time in long time.
- running game much improved...two 100 yard rushers and almost a third, 5 rushing TDs (6 all last year) against a bowl team.
- O-line much improved, even with loss of Marcus Jackson
- Play if TE promising. Not having to leave Wolfe and Ellis in for protection all the time.
- Young, athletic receivers in the game (even with North not targeted and Pig & Croom out.)
- a better second half than first half (which you want to see in game one.)
- Dobbs play
- return game improved
- beat a bowl team (again by 29!)
- should move up a bit in polls
- have stuff on film to work on this week. Players know where they struggled and it will be a point of emphasis in prep.
- extra day of no classes with holiday?
- home opener at Neyland will be electric.
See ya there. 1-0
