Tennessee was back on the practice field today, kick-starting Week 3 with “Technique Tuesday” — a day full of individual drills.
The media saw five periods of practice on a gorgeous afternoon in Knoxville, but what we didn't witness was a quarterback throwing a single pass to a WR, TE or RB.
Seriously.
Instead, we watched lots of technical drills, with an emphasis on special teams, ball security, tackling and footwork.
During punt return drills, the guys focused on making the first man miss, with Charlton Warren and managers hurling exercise balls at the returners to dodge immediately after fielding the punt.
The receivers did a couple different drills working on release off the line and downfield blocking. Kevin Beard was very hands on during the two sessions, with Butch Jones looking on as well. I thought Jennings and Callaway were far and away the best two during the drill.
Finally, the quarterbacks did a number of different footwork drills, but most noteworthy, Mike Canales had the group working on play-action passes under center. A sign of a new offensive wrinkle?
This & That
* The coaches from Knoxville Catholic, along with a couple dozen players, were at practice. 2018 5-star commit Cade Mays was not present, as he was on a hunting trip Tuesday. 2020 OT Bryn Tucker was in the house, though. Other recruits included DB Chris Smith and DL Malik Vann.
* Fresh off their Pro Day on Friday, Cam Sutton, Alvin Kamara and Jalen Reeves-Maybin were all still around the facilities.
* The running back group was extra-thin Tuesday.
* During center-quarterback exchange drills, Jashon Robertson, who has assumed the No. 1 spot with Coleman Thomas sidelined, was snapping with Quinten Dormady.
* With so many kids in attendance Tuesday, the musical playlist was … a lot different than normal. The players worked out to Hall and Oates, Black Eye Peas and AC/DC, to which Jauan Jennings played the air guitar for.
